[It appears that it needs some rework here.]

Enhancement of school culture

Good morning, Mrs Poh, Mrs Koh, teachers and fellow Andersonians. As most of you may know, a strong a positive school culture in Anderson and our achievements in school are pretty much interrelated to one another. Today, I will be sharing with you the importance of a positive school culture as well as how we could help in enhancing our this school culture of ours.

Most of you might know the ANDE values and their many applications in our school culture. Think of a time when you nearly want to give up because of a competition you have lost or an examination you have failed. No matter how serious the situation is, you will always have friends and teachers who will shower some compassion and support to help you get back on your own feet again, and perhaps help you show a lot of determination and resilience in tough times, wouldn't you? It is by this caring action that will help us achieve the goal that we want, be it obtaining a Gold With Honours at the Singapore Youth Festival or the champion position for a sports competition.

This brings me to another two values, Excellence in our Endeavours and Daring in Our Dreams. As I have mentioned earlier, we need to display a sense of determination in order to achieve the shared goal that we desire, be it in a co-curricular activity or our classes. In spite of the limited amount of time for preparation, we always have to give our best during the actual occasion itself. There you have it, a combination of Excellence in our Endeavours and Daring in Our Dreams put in place, coupled with high expectations placed by the school. Without these values, how could the euphoria from our achievements, the many gold awards from the SYF the previous year and our day off from our exemplary "O" Level results be made possible?

As we are merely at the beginning of a new school year, I am sure most of you are enthusiastic about adding spice to the school culture. With Inspiring Mondays that are here for students and teachers alike to share inspiring stories and testimonials that instill the ANDE values, why not grab this opportunity to spread the importance of our our ANDE values to each other, especially to the new secondary one juniors who have just entered our school? With the trend of celebrating your classmate's birthdays in the canteen, why not give a little care that would make the celebrations a blessing? Even as the teachers give us extra lessons throughout the whole school year, why not set up a small peer tutoring group with your teachers and meet up in the school library when you are free?

Those are just some of my suggestions for you to seize the opportunity to enhance our school culture. However, as we walk through an uneven pathway in our campus lives, let us start small by loving one another as friends, and celebrating each other victories, no matter how significant they are. With that, I thank you for your kindest attention.

~~Adapted from Talon by Janet Lee Carey.

#1 ,
My throat tightened as we looked at my fourth finger. The horny flesh. Blue-green and scaly as a lizard's hide. Claw of the beast with a black curving talon at the end.

#2,
These darker thoughts soon vanished. Such beauty all around! Twilight stars pricked the sky and the moon white as meadowsweet. Wings flitted overhead. A chorus of toads croaked in the streambed. I took these sights and sound in as Mother turned onto a path that chased up the mountain.

(came up with by me)

1) Hearing the soothing sound of the calm waves, I strolled along the coastline with my hair and dress flowing in the eastward-blowing wind.

2) She gazed at him with her azure eyes, in such a dramatic way that he would feel as if they were really sparkling like a diamond gleaming in sunlight.

3) As the candle flame I was staring at started to die out, it gave me an atmosphere of separation from my friends after going our separate ways to junior colleges and polytechnics.

Question:
Write a story (of about 300 words) ending with this sentence: "In the end, it wasn't such a bad bargain after all."

Essay:
"Lalalala, what kind of present should I get for my sister?" I said to myself sweetly when heading to Northpoint Shopping Centre to get my younger sister Yinyan a good present for her birthday since that special day for her was coming in a few days. I felt that if I did not get a present for her, that meant that I was apathetic towards her and that I did not take my role as an elder sibling seriously.

As I entered the shopping centre, I kept contemplating about all the presents Yinyan had been receiving for the past three years. These included a Sailor Moon keychain, a picture frame made from seashells as well as a floral arrangement specially made by me. I had the slightest inkling that I could get a present of a similar value from a gift shop. However, I felt that my sister wanted something different this time. Hence, I went into Popular Bookstore to check out a suitable book for her to read. Just as I entered the store, I saw someone at an attractive-looking booth advertising for a book that was published only recently. "Hmm, let me have a look," I thought as visions of my sister thoroughly enjoying the new book swam around my head.

When I took a closer look at the booth, I saw numerous books stacked in a neat arrangement on the table, and a bespectacled man hold a book titled "The Legend of Eris, The Dwarf Planet." "Wow, this book sounds so wonderful. But I don't think my sister would like it since she has been abhorring science fiction stories since primary one," I thought. But what I discovered next was the man persuading me to buy the book! With comments such as "It will keep you in suspense throughout the story," and "That story has a plot of novelty," I felt that I had no choice but to buy the book. Therefore, I took it from the man and paid the money to the cashier afterwards.

I reached home with a blue face. Looking at my expression, Yinyan approached me, asking me what was wrong. I passed the book to her and she immediately read the title. Out of the blue, she enjoyed the new-published book instead of showing her hatred towards it. It then dawned on me that her attitude towards science fiction stories had changed, indicating that my visions had come true. In the end, it wasn't such a bad bargain after all.

This picture depicts three senior citizens playing the erhu and a banjo-like instrument (whose name I don't really know). By looking at the instruments, they must be playing a Chinese song, as the erhu and the banjo-like instrument are of Chinese origin. The senior citizens seem to be putting up a mini informal performance as they are not on a stage or amphitheatre playing their instruments, but rather, under a shady pavilion. At the background is the abundant greenery or plants and trees, so this could take place at a neighbourhood park. A young boy in the foreground who is watching the performers is probably part of the audience. He to be looking fervently at the performers; and he is most likely appreciating the performance while having a desire to learn to play one of the instruments when he grows up. After this picture, the peformers would move on to the next item, or their next piece that they need to play.
