My throat tightened as we looked at my fourth finger. The horny flesh. Blue-green and scaly as a lizard's hide. Claw of the beast with a black curving talon at the end.

These darker thoughts soon vanished. Such beauty all around! Twilight stars pricked the sky and the moon white as meadowsweet. Wings flitted overhead. A chorus of toads croaked in the streambed. I took these sights and sound in as Mother turned onto a path that chased up the mountain.
